CCAC November 5th, 2020 MEETING – CCAC Mark Denaro speaking on Biographical Namesakes in the Hobby

Speaking on the topic of “The Namesakes – biographical information about some of the people who have had fish named after them or been influential in ichthyology”, Mark Denaro has been keeping freshwater aquariums since 1970 and marine aquariums since 1976.  Mark has been keeping planted and biotope aquariums since the mid-70s and was keeping reef aquariums before that term was coined.  He has bred well over 200 species of freshwater fish and propagated over 150 species of aquatic plants.  He has spawned 10 species of marine fish and propagated over 40 species of marine invertebrates.  Mark is a coauthor of Adventurous Aquarist Guide to the 101 Best Freshwater Nano Species, published by Microcosm, Ltd. in September of 2014.  He has written articles for several national and international magazines and wrote the recurring column ‘Into the Labyrinth’ for “Tropical Fish Hobbyist” magazine.  He is currently a Contributing Editor and writes feature articles for TFH.  Mark has been involved in the organized hobby since 1984.  He is a past president of the International Betta Congress, the Indianapolis Aquarium Society and the Bucks County Aquarium Society.  He is a founding member and the inaugural president of the American Labyrinth Fish Association.  He is a well-known speaker and judge and has lectured to over 50 aquarium societies in more than 20 states plus Canada and Bermuda and spoken at numerous regional and national conventions. Mark runs the fish room for Pets Plus in Lawrenceville, NJ.  He also makes videos that he shares on YouTube as All Natural Aquatics.

CCAC October 1st, 2020 MEETING – CCAC Dr Eric Thomas speaking on Setting Up To Breed Plecos and Corys

Dr. Eric Thomas started keeping fish in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, when he was about 8 years old.  With his older brother Bill, Eric kept and bred mouth-brooding cichlids (Geophagus and several Lake Malawi mbuna species), along with Steatocraneus casuarius… and convicts (who doesn’t start with convicts?). Eric and Bill were members of the now-defunct Tri-City Aquarium Society of Southern California. In college, Eric studied captive husbandry of vertebrates; with his mentor Professor Rudolfo Ruibal at UC Riverside, in 1978 Eric was the first person to breed the Budgett’s frog Lepidobatrachus laevis in captivity.  In Dr. Ruibal’s lab, Eric learned about and began studying skin glands and their function. Eric went on to earn a Ph.D. under Dr. Paul Licht at UC Berkeley, studying reproductive endocrinology and the influence of sex hormones on frog skin glands. Currently, Eric is an associate professor of Biology, co-chair and director of graduate studies for the Biological Sciences Department at University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. Eric’s research is split between reproductive pheromone production in frogs and self-poisoning in Corydoras catfishes. At home, Eric’s interests are keeping and breeding catfish, primarily Corydoras and Loricariids.  Between home and work, Eric runs up to 27 aquaria and currently has over 40 species of catfish.  Socially, Eric operates a YouTube Channel (Bekateen) and FaceBook page (Bekateen’s FishRoom) for sharing his knowledge and experiences with fellow fish keepers; he is also the program coordinator for the Sacramento Aquarium Society and a moderator on PlanetCatfish.com.

CCAC Summer Trunk Sale and BAP/HAP Silent Auction August 8, 2020, 6pm-8pm Aquatic Arts Parking Lot in Brownsburg, Indiana

Circle City Aquarium Club is hosting a Trunk Sale.

WHAT: CCAC Trunk Sale

WHEN: Saturday August 8, 2020, 6pm – 8pm

WHERE: Aquatic Arts Parking Lot, 554 Pitt Rd, Brownsburg, IN 46112

WHO: All CCAC members as well as the public.

What you need to know.

  • CCAC will staff a table to answer questions, accept BAP and HAP submissions and to renew memberships. The 2 for 1 membership will be in effect during the Trunk Sale.
  • Aquatic Arts is graciously letting us use their parking lot, however, this event will occur after normal business hours. We will not be permitted inside the building.
  • All sales are exclusively between the buyer and the seller. CCAC does not guarantee any item bought or sold.
  • BAP Points may be earned by submitting completed paperwork at the CCAC table.
  • All state and local requirements for PPE and social distancing must be followed.
  • Pre -registration is not required. But CCAC reserves the right to remove any individual from this event.
  • This a free event to buy or sell. CCAC, however, will NOT be providing tables, umbrellas or tents.

BAP and HAP – While BAP and HAP would not normally be accepted at a trunk sale, due to the COVID crisis and the unusual circumstances in which we find ourselves the club is making provisions for members to earn points. The process will be as follows:

  • All BAP and HAP submissions will be sold using a Silent Auction method.
  • BAP submissions must include completed paper work, failure to complete the form properly will result in submission not being accepted. You can find the BAP forms and rules here. You can find HAP forms here.
  • Acceptance of any submission is entirely at the discretion of the BAP and HAP chairperson(s).
  • All submissions must be turned into the CCAC table by 6:25pm. Late entries will not be accepted.
  • Sellers will be sent a check for proceeds at some point following the date of the trunk sale.
  • Donations to the club are accepted.
  • The Silent Auction will run from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
  • You do not need to be a member or have a bid number to participate.
  • Highest bid on each item wins. Winners of the auction items must be present to pick the item up.
  • For the Silent Auction, credit cards will be the only accepted form of payment. No checks. No cash. Transactions between buyers and sellers are up to their agreed upon discretion.
